Find Hidden Money in Your Home

You might be missing out on potential benefits that will reduce your taxes.

new_braunfels_hidden_moneyOkay. I’ll admit it. Tax exemptions isn’t exactly a sexy topic. But saving money that you’ve already worked hard to earn is important to everyone. And if you use those savings to buy something silky and lacy…. now we’re talking! See how I did that? I made tax exemption sexy . . .

If you bought a home last year, it’s time to file for a homestead exemption. What is it? Homestead exemptions remove a portion of your home’s value from taxation which lowers your property taxes. If you purchased your home and closed on it last year and use the home as your primary residence (as of January 1) this means you qualify to apply for a Texas Homestead Exemption. This is done by filling out a free application that you submit to the county where your home is located (link to application below).

If you are unsure if you have filed, you can check through your county’s tax appraisal website (local links below) or call them directly to verify. If your homestead is not filed you can print out a form from the link below and mail it in to your county tax appraisal office.

Did you update your Texas driver’s license?  The application must be submitted with a copy of your driver’s license and the address shown must match the homestead address. The application must be received by April 30th to be considered.

There are several types of exemptions available depending on where you live and your personal situation (school taxes, county taxes, 65 and older, disabled). It’s important to educate yourself on the benefits in order to avoid missing out on savings you may not realize are available.
